Ngan Lek served as assistant director at Shaw Brothers in the 1970s, working with Sun Chung on several projects. He later worked on a couple of films by New Wave director Lau Shing-hon, as production coordinator on House of the Lute (1979) and as assistant director on The Head Hunter (1982). He directed two films in the late 1970s, The Gambler (1977) and Illusions Come True (1979).
