My work as a director was often between persistence and compromise; it was endless joy.
Lai Kai-keung entered the film industry in 1984, following the footsteps of older brother Ivan Lai Kai-ming. He started as continuity person, switching to assistant director in 1985, working with such directors as Danny Lee, Terry Tong, Ronny Yu, John Woo, Tsui Hark, Corey Yuen and Yuen Wo-ping. He also assistant-directed brother Ivan Lai’s The Blue Jean Monster (1991) and Erotic Ghost Story III (1992).
He made his debut as director with Ghost House : A True Story (1994), followed by Love, Guns & Glass (1995, co-directed with Ivan Lai) and Yu Pui Tsuen III (1996).
Lai later served as assistant director on Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Corey Yuen’s So Close (2002) and Jeff Lau’s Kungfu Cyborg: Metallic Attraction (2009).
